Here’s the broad strokes:

When it comes to books, most people don't know that a vibrant, creative underground even exists — much less how to find it. We celebrate local craft beer, indie films, farmers markets, and the band before they sold out. But when it comes to books, we largely default to the same few corporate behemoths — not because we prefer them, but because that's where the books are easy to find.

The small press is harder to find. That's not an accident — it's economics, logistics, and the quiet tyranny of shelf space and distribution deals. Libraries, bookshops, and online retailers all operate under pressures that favor the already-known over the genuinely new.

But here's what the small press does that no big publisher can: it takes chances. It puts out harder, darker, weirder, and more dangerous books than any board of directors could stomach, and it makes artisan editions with the literal fingerprints of their makers on them. It lets miscreants and nobodies bare their artistic souls — and sometimes make waves in the process. The banned books, the impossible books, the books that change you — those come from people willing to risk everything on a single strange vision.

The small press isn’t a business, it's a proving ground. An explosives lab. R&D for culture.

So consider this your cordial invitation. Find a new writer, publisher, or artist to support. Buy directly from the people who make the work. Request small press titles at your library. Tell someone. It's an easy way to save a very specific — and very necessary — world.

Keep books dangerous.
